I think I would be tempted to grow something called Chinese sacred lily just for the name!

who seems to have a lot of old varieties - I know exactly what you mean about 'modern' narcissus - I was horrified that something so pretty could smell so awful.

We call them Jonquils here and they have long been a favourite of mine. The scent is heavenly. I've not noticed any problems with the bulbs, but then I haven't bought new bulbs for a quite a while as mine stay in the ground and just multiply by themselves. I probably should dig them out each summer, but I can't be bothered and they still flower away. Gorgeous things. You can't beat the good old-fashioned varieties can you?
