i'm not sure that these are true Roman hyacinths
because they have survived just fine
in an exposed spot in my garden
and i have read that "true" Roman hyacinths
are not as hardy as the others.
i can't remember who i purchased them from.
If it was Old House Gardens
then they are the real ones
if not, then i'm less certain.
they are delightful, loose clusters of flowers
with a much more casual air about them
than the more robust, more familiar stalks of
the Dutch hyacinths
which i also enjoy, but
given their strong stature
i find it a bit trickier to know how to incorporate
these in the garden.
i've recycled forced Dutch hyacinths from their bowls
into the garden
where they do return, but as looser clusters of flowers
not unlike the Romans.
